Food safety in childcare, aged care and community settings

Adapt core food safety controls to the people, setting and food service you operate.

Childcare

Consider vulnerable children, bottle and formula preparation, allergies, safe food storage and hygiene in both kitchens and classrooms. Follow current health guidance and centre procedures for preparation methods rather than relying on a generic cooking rule.

Aged care

Coordinate resident information, texture-modified meals, allergen controls, temperature control and meal delivery. Staff need a clear response to suspected foodborne illness or an outbreak, including reporting and preservation of relevant records.

Schools and community organisations

Volunteer turnover, donated food, temporary events and shared kitchens create different risks from an established commercial kitchen. Induct every food handler and establish clear responsibilities before the event starts.

Confirm the applicable framework

Some services have additional food safety program or sector obligations. Ask the relevant state authority about the rules for your operation. These industry summaries do not determine a business's legal classification.

Official sources

This page summarises the sources above as at 27 October 2026. It is not legal advice and is not endorsed by any regulator. Where your situation differs, the official source and your local authority prevail.
